I take it back.
Being a nice person is a noble resolution and all, but I just took my bridesmaid’s dress for Sarah’s wedding to be altered, and when I tried it on, it was no longer too big in some of the places it used to be. Not cool. I never thought I’d be upset about spending less money on alterations, but there you have it.
I resolve to do three iPhone workouts per week.
resolve
This year, I want to be a nicer person to be around.
I know I usually make resolutions that will help me get in touch with good health and tread lightly on the Earth. They usually involve some kind of a rigid but manageable schedule (eat veggies once a day, exercise three times a week, etc.) and are designed to make me live better and feel better. I will still try to do those things. I will cook...
People I Would Visit if I Went to NY
Brian
Yi Yi
Rozi
That’s a pretty good selection. Perhaps after ATDP this year.

I like the clarity of To-Do lists
suchprettywords:
Because I need the pretense of organization to conceal the complete mess that is my life. It’s so simple to just write everything down, to structure a concrete plan with each hastily scribbled phrase. Succinct and unavoidable, these lists give me a lulling comfort even if that ease turns out to be unfounded. And so, my desk and walls are plastered with pieces of paper, blending...
I Baked!
…and it’s only 7:40. I’m starting to remember what it felt like to be a functioning individual outside of the work day and family obligations. This is good.
I did a lot of reading today, too, although that was not as outside-the-work-day as it should have been. I read some Hitchens and I read about a book vending machine in Hayward. The reading gave my brain a much-needed...

work project
Adena is having us start research projects at work, which is actually kinda perfect for me. In fact, I wish she had asked me to do this a month ago, because I could really have used this kind of time and structure to get my thinking straight about grad school.
Anyway, step one is to go through my old Tumblr posts and notebooks and look for ideas I’ve had about research and about learning....

On Following Through
Holy crap. I was just rooting through my Tumblr posts and found this un-published gem from May 8th, 2010 7:08pm.
Good advice, past me.
For Mother’s Day, my mom asked me to tidy the residual stuff I’ve left in her house. After sleeping in and watching a few too many episodes of Jerseylicious (I know; I have a problem.), I hoisted myself off the couch and started to take...

Thanksgiving/Birthday Week Highlights
Watching Community. (Everyone, go buy the DVDs to show NBC that the show is profitable!)
Making pie with my lovable pie-making minions.
Food and family on Thanksgiving. I finally met my cousin’s son, Xander! Cutest baby ever. (Related: picking Secret Santa names with all 3 Secret Santa groups. I am so glad I know who I’m buying for now!)
Karaoke with my mom’s family....

Am I Making a Mistake?
As some of you know, I’m working on an application to the Ph.D program in School Psychology here at Berkeley. (*fingers crossed*)
However, I just came across this tumblr:
I am a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of Illinois. I’m currently writing a dissertation about the role of bookmobiles in designing, building, and contesting communities in the United States since turn...
Clarification
Lloyd made a great point about the outrage following Friday’s attack: “If you’ve been shocked and surprised by the level of police brutality against peaceful #OWS protesters all over the country, then you’ve simply not been paying attention to the last decade.”
In light of that truth, let me be clear: my disproportional distress is selfish and biased. It hurts me...

back on the wagon(s)
I have fallen off a great many wagons in the past few months. The amazing thing is that I never realized I was ON so many wagons. And to lurch to a stop after the momentum that comes with six wagons — well, that’s enough to make anyone sick.
These are my wagons:
eat food. not too much. mostly plants. (3 in 1 from Michael Pollan)
cook & bake.
exercise.
save money.
be...

Rewriting in Style →
bobulate:
Writers and editors might review this 1960 F.L. Lucas essay, On the Fascination of Style, brought to my attention by Stan Carey. Much is still relevant, particularly these principles:
First, honesty. In literature, as in life, one of the fundamentals is to find, and be, one’s true self. …. In writing, in the long run, pretense does not work. …. If handwriting reveals character, writing...

The I-metric →
bobulate:
Psychologist James Pennebaker looks at the hidden meaning in the language you use in a new book The Secret Life of Pronouns, particularly regarding the pronoun “I:”
[W]e discovered that in any interaction, the person with the higher status uses I-words less (yes, less) than people who are low in status. The effects were quite robust and, naturally, I wanted to test this on myself. I...
Highlights
No, not Highlights for Kids. Highlights of my recent life!
Class this summer. Duh. Great kids, great work. Ideas for next year are a-brewing.
Outside Lands! Sub-highlights included lasers, mac n cheese, and predictable but nonetheless heart-lifting encores.
hitRECord. Man, there’s nothing like a cute boy to inspire the masses. Really, though, I’m extremely excited about this sort of...
