"We don't see things as they are; we see them as we are." -Anais Nin |
Lloyd made a great point about the outrage following Friday’s attack: “If you’ve been shocked and surprised by the level of police brutality against peaceful #OWS protesters all over the country, then you’ve simply not been paying attention to the last decade.”
In light of that truth, let me be clear: my disproportional distress is selfish and biased. It hurts me personally, in a way that other abuses have not yet hurt me, when this happens at MY school. I know Davis, and I know the collective attitude of it students. Let me tell you: these are not attention whores or recreational activists. I feel like my family got pepper sprayed in the face. (On a positive note, I am extremely proud that the protesters kept their focus and cool during the Chancellor’s exit.)
I hope that I will be able to access these feelings when next I hear about unchecked authority that’s not so close to home.
